Initially named the New York Society of Architects, but later changed to the AIA, the group created bylaws to govern the group. After restricting membership to just New York based architects the group invited architects from other cities to join. By 1880, there were chapters in St. Louis, San Francisco, Rhode Island, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Boston, Chicago, Baltimore and Albany.

The organization offers its membership access to professional and design information, contract documents, client oriented resources, personal benefits and professional development opportunities.
