Sleep Apnea Treatment and Dentistry Intersect Thanks to Avi Weisfogel

Sleep is one of the most important things a person can do for their overall health. However, over a third of Americans do not get the recommended 7 hours of sleep per night, the amount of time needed for the normal adult to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, mental distress, coronary heart disease and early death. Almost 12% of this third actually get less than 5 hours of sleep per night, causing them to have an even higher chance of getting negative consequences.

One of the causes of sleep deprivation is sleep apnea. Affecting an estimated 22 million Americans, a startling 80 percent of those with moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea go undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapse, cutting off the airway preventing the sufferer to stop breathing temporarily. Those with untreated slap apnea often suffer a higher chance of high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, depression, and headaches. In addition, they have a higher chance of poorer performance in everyday activities at work and school, higher risk of car crashes, and academic underachievement in children and teens.
