We are entering an unrivaled time in political discord. Never before has our country been so divided, at least in modern times. In fact, this divide has grown so great that it has brought George Soros back into the fold for the progressive party. Soros has made sure to focus his charity on more than just money. Soros frequently funds progressive and social justice movements around the world. It’s not easy to sit idly by while watching a man campaign against everything that you stand for. George Soros had vowed to scale back his involvement in American Presidential races after working with Al Gore in 2004. However, he could not just sit by and watch the 2016 Presidential campaign go by. So Soros came back in order to start working with Democrats and progressives in order to create a gameplan to battle the nationalistic jingoism of what passes for Trump’s America. In fact, Soros has come out so strongly against Donald Trump that he has publicly lambasted the sitting President.
Still, we get ahead of ourselves by focusing on solely the current election campaign. Instead we should look back over George Soros’ career and really take in the power of some of the movements that he has helped to pioneer. We can look at, for instance, the shooting of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson. The shooting sparked protests around the country and in particularly the city of Fergus. Soros himself has worked hand in hand with grass roots activists over the years in order to get protests like those in Ferguson off of the ground.
In fact, Soros has given upwards of $33 million in a single year to support grass roots activism. These donations came by way of his Open Society Foundations. It’s hard to undersell just how important these contributions actually are. Without someone like Soros backing them, the Ferguson protests would have died with a solitary whimper within a day or two. Instead, Soros was able to help turn these protests into a national rallying call for equality and justice for people of all races.
George Soros knows a thing or two about equality and inequality. He had been living in Nazi-occupied Hungary as a child, seeing firsthand the atrocities committed by nationalistic and racist individuals. Since then he has put himself in a position to make true change and reform all around the world. Read more about George at The New York Times.
