As a general rule, a person interested in becoming a litigator begins pursuing such a career while still in law school. A law student intent on becoming a litigation attorney will focus on a set of core courses that include evidence, civil procedure, and courtroom practice.

Oftentimes, a law student who wants to embark on a career as a litigation attorney will participate in a law school’s moot court program. In addition, a student who wants to litigate will also join a law school’s legal clinic. Through a clinical program, a law student is able to represent actual clients while still in school, under the supervision of a licensed lawyer.

Following graduation from law school, a future litigator may elect to take a job on the staff of a prosecuting attorney on the federal, state, or local level. Through such a position of employment, a budding litigator has the chance to participate in courtroom procedures more frequently than is likely in other legal positions.

Litigators can be found in private practice, in corporations, and in organizations. They also can be found on the staffs of different governmental agencies.
